Difference between Acupuncture and Dry Needling

If you are in Dallas, TX, Dr. Mark Hanson D.C., L.Ac. at East West Acupuncture and Chiropractic assists his patients by using several techniques, including acupuncture and Dry Needling, to help patients who need relief from back pain and other types of chronic pain.

What Is Acupuncture?

While it seems exotic, acupuncture is a technique used by our chiropractor to help patients who are suffering from many different kinds of pain, including back pain. During the process, small solid needles are inserted into different areas of the body to help move the Qi of the body. The entire procedure may take 30 to 45 minutes.

Acupuncture is a very old technique that has been practiced for thousands of years and has its roots in ancient China. When using acupuncture, the practitioner relies on the ancient philosophy to guide him in providing the service. This differs from dry needling which we will explain more about down below.

What Is Dry Needling?

Dry needling is a much newer procedure and originated in the West. It is similar to acupuncture as it uses a solid filiform needle and its primary goal is to release trigger points and/or muscle spasms thus the methodology is different. Because of its newer origins, dry needling is based on more research-based ideas regarding anatomy of the muscles of the body. It does not rely on the older philosophy of acupuncture of the meridians and the acupuncture points and has its own methodology separate from  acupuncture.
